Vanilla Bean Sugar

The vanilla bean sugar you get at the supermarket is an absolute and total rip off. You can make your own one at a fraction of the retail price that has a  higher content of vanilla beans in it. The result is a beautiful vanilla sugar that you cannot buy in the shop. I enjoyed every single minute of the making process.  It just smells like you are in heaven!

To make 150g of vanilla bean sugar, you will need:

145g Caster sugar (you can use any organic unprocessed sugar as well)
3 vanilla beans
a container

Prep. time: 10 min

Cut your vanilla pods in half and cut again diagonally in half.

Either use a teaspoon or the blunt part of a pairing knife to scrape off  the seeds inside the pod.

Add the vanilla seeds into your bowl of sugar.
Put on some disposable gloves and rub the vanilla seeds with the sugar.
Most of the vanilla oil is left on the skin, so don't forget to rub that goodness into the sugar as well.
Once the vanilla beans are evenly distributed.

Separate those unwanted bits by using a sieve.

Your own vanilla sugar is ready for bottling.
Do keep your scraped vanilla beans for future use. You can use it next time when you make custard or sugar syrup.

Garnish with two halves of a new vanilla pod.

Don't forget to write a little note about the serving suggestions for the person that you are giving it to. This is what I wrote down:

Vanilla Beans Sugar

Sprinkle a teaspoon of this magic powder whenever the recipes call for a vanilla extract. You can sprinkle into your pancake mix or just about into any baking. Enjoy!
